Logging Camp<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/c21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="187" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiKWK2d05QJ8JQTq8qeEGFCMTn1oBrCu6P5Ghu_9IEt-8vxRVYCrjg0jgnGyRdHPBsP4LSvezCmPId2BEBAw39pNK5JOTr540VwIMbQ-QBXV6EF5oeOIIkqtX1ODlLELJCNmgjHuIu54Q/s320/c21small.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
The Alpine Lumber Company had several logging camps, there are references to Camp 1, Camp 2, and a Lower Camp. Our 1930 photo shows a couple of buildings west of Alpine, we decided to investigate.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/c22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLVzDPR5iBqCQEFaFYduizYB-62pNfmK6Fgi0w8dq87hbDgE-hz-r8-vzi9gYlJyMaCrVZLINMut9XDPr9tsef5SuGe6Wr8CS-m9RPievmP6XWhEHdoq_-CoSrulh-HDAVFtIQLelgzhU/s320/c22small.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
On Sunday, September 16, we hiked along the BPA power line from Carroll Creek to the area where we suspected the camp used to be. The old railroad grade, marked with a red line on the map, was clearly visible. East of the camp the railroad grade is now a road, west of the camp it is covered with brush, nettles, and devils club.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/c24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf6uRZpoBm21NBCMhxSzTM1W6BpJUZBFLkQnz3V4coB24lGOPUvmoQCNiQNc-pdF8ToVCUebupWYFjow6SthjeAaqBPD4oTfx6WL7Lad6a4Xq2dNaC0GAPy9jRxnK_xpBcdMO9PlayFb4/s320/c24small.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
We think the logging camp was here, the road that curves to the right is probably the old railroad grade on the map and straight ahead is another grade that heads west. Unfortunately, a creek has washed tons of gravel over the area where the camp appears to have been located, we were unable to find any debris or evidence of structures.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/c25.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQmsMSxvE4Kr6HY-BEwlNdeYP1MGNb3fBTdukcU8iLSnWYDPNbbkJAeDJorPnaWd7cNZBoAWxVqZMpM-dcGj_clUcMg1d03zLn-0wLT_UkMkzaRe57I7SyQzhbg0ql6D9EfexWdBJJSMY/s320/c25small.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
This is looking west from where we believe the camp was, the red line shows where the railroad came out of the woods and went west another couple of miles.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/c30.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDQbDz-45E8OhGYpjlaeN_DFFfWL57YolOAOjR3xxE8vEJlCfB-oc4HWzWmt4NB8MDfoYphYTCLanOVqDOXPRgI3h7KocWZcWdfLydokPDXZe5wAqkdRKGRogb0h-u3IZheETzI-97Nqo/s320/c30small.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
Here we are about 500 feet west of the camp standing on the old railroad grade, marked by an X on the photo. The tracks went past the BPA towers and crossed a bridge...
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/c27.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="204" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjp2B6Ct_HUJbqSfxL0MAE7O6wKX7MsX2-2JVjPTbTgCI-mpzN4SAaQ33qYus1y1tRQdqvU5rZKx9t4k5UFc6LnhYjyV8llowS-UmPMsljCSup0PzPslhBE7Q60CJ4dCB7TkQu6ihrwgQ/s320/c27small.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
This is looking east, the tracks passed to the right of the BPA tower and crossed a bridge. We didn't find any remains of the bridge, there is a BPA road there now and anything that was still standing after 1930 was probably bulldozed or burned.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/c31.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwbZ4_XVoMn5UFaFbvFDmIQdDeyR4cLTd5ZRZhElxiV8LnyJbKvAf8f_peeZADDn86R5XTkBBMioJRxKL8TB8XXw9Fv7egY7NFv-k-04wStwug1ESHdkdixgk84zhYmSnvcsqiLbjln5c/s1600/c31small.jpg" /></a></div>
The original Stevens Pass Highway crossed the Tye River near here, in the afternoon we walked down to the old bridge site. In the 1930 photo we can see at least one structure near the bridge, we spent some time looking for that but did not find anything. In 1930 the road followed the Tye River west of the bridge, the river channel has changed course since then and a section of the road has washed out.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/c28.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuCbZ6fjQnqmnMCWHckxsSv0ACxA2o6uAaRu01lnwojTYBcJWzgsUhPuOFA7S46tS4f2_NnNgfzm7Yea4Y4c69UxndDYdTZIZ3qW-wa6zH2eZsb3waEpNes4qponLXAnESNGneiqp7boA/s320/c28small.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
Donna is standing on the south bank of the Tye River where the Stevens Pass Highway crossed, this is looking west.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Saturday July 7 Tim and I made a trip to Alpine to look for the water intake for the Great Northern Railway 50,000 gallon water tank east of town. The tank was supplied with water from Carroll Creek using a 6" wooden pipe, we used this map as a guide:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/cd66.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc6uZf6vnA8vy1xWKLlbfNFqXAHkyBb7dquax8Fon3mpXAI6IUJU23-U1dHWhDgz3SdbxffFVifaAUuW_QZ5dGSbKMk4Ju0bY-a0ggSchdDXs4qDVZxm6sEBrjgSQLLj7Bit_M2uwSln4/s1600/cd66small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
We walked up the hill on the east side of the creek, after some heavy brushwacking we came across this artifact, the remains of a wooden pipe. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/cd67.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaOd-nSiGNxep0mAr6vhOGKEmJ00LlRIG_tbqzujsZlM3as-sTNajoOIGG9A8ZqEutyWmUOE09_R3eFlWd_Kd6dq1C69HXSnQUYdcLEioSIXygnnTVZeLFOoV76nIyObvIRKvpXz_cL5M/s320/cd67small.jpg" width="243" /></a></div>
The pipe has been on the ground since probably 1920, the wood is all rotted. We did not find any surviving examples of wire wound wood pipe but our pipe probably looked like this, a six inch (inside diameter) wood pipe outside the Pickett Museum in Index.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/nlc12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" kda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXPm2TExZmAJVLBv6H4OAFY5S0ovgVr1lZZZt7HI3as5aQ0lYdNDP6o2PyWKCLalfshqC8JHGqmGfjFMlJWjUDAeBxpHqYinhmoFYza9U35oYyXisXGjM0jtiwU28QMmjvR-ZG-bX9ldI/s1600/nlc12small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/cd69.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="204" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6e3PSut-zlhw1l62YjakFi6__d_0ArA-fbk2MqyBe4QyatkehddqHLOmxxlykSPl_j72ISZHgR_P2ia36M3TBrrERk2gnhRx8TIo0VLFBfsLHyp8St2HkHWdWyTd5fUW8qnaNp2h-qWA/s320/cd69small.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
There were quite a few sections of pipe laying on the ground downhill from the intake at the creek, apparently it was above ground near the creek and then was buried underground downhill toward the water tank. I estimate about 1000 feet of pipe was underground. Here is a picture of a trench being dug for a water pipe sometime around 1900, the trench line for our pipe looks very similar to this. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.sewerhistory.org/grfx/construct/general/images/1900_cog03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaJtqW06cN-ZvBWMbwYK0XQATOa5D7Gl6VHgH1cSi-N7HOERdnmmix3hPmCg_IO4sscRE6bd6zmL4-1K3cVi7a4FtIDbxUPp90tDchPv1qYXgGa-KvpLDfkS7Fhcq5PVxFwRgvX-H8CQM/s320/cd70small.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
The blue map shows the location of the water tank and water pipe completed in 1920. On the right is a 1930 photo, the area cleared for the water pipe is very distinct.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc118.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdzCV2iN5sOGjQNMd2VHN_pHVbOhWBb4_njbfNsDoyg9AOCSYv4EYckzQmnJQjtjmUyo0LJPRq9xzd9e6ikrF8I0P39cxxTWZFliRuM-3bvRb51nd_q3gZ66F-j_34aSH0ryD2CJ1ueDY/s1600/alc118small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
In May 2011 Donna and I found where the wood pipe entered the water tank.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
We found two of these pipe clamp things.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We followed the pipe to the creek and it ended up here, we expected to see a dam on the creek but if there was ever anything there it is gone now. <br />

<br />
On the way back to civilization we stopped at the Pickett Historical Museum in Index. Lee Pickett lived in this house, he was a photographer for the Great Northern Railway and also took quite a few pictures of Alpine. The University of Washington has a large collection of his photos <a href="http://content.lib.washington.edu/pickettweb/index.html">here</a>.<br />

The Skykomish Historical Society has some aerial photos of the Tye River Valley from 1930, you can search "alpine" on the <a href="http://www.dflatblues.com/SkykomishHistoricalSociety/Collections.html">photo collections</a> page to find them. Bob Kelly at the museum gave me some very large size photos and today I made a trip to an area east of Alpine Falls to try and locate a section of the Alpine Lumber Company logging railroad that appears in one of the photos. Here is an overview of the 1930 area with some landmarks.<br />

I drove up the Old Cascade Highway and found the railroad grade intersected with the highway and followed it to where it once crossed the Tye River. At the bottom of this picture you can see a Great Northern train going through the Bonneville Cut east of Alpine.</div>

The bridge crossed the Tye River here. Highway 2 is on the left. The river is only about 25 feet wide here, it flows through a narrow channel between two very large rock formations.</div>

I know the 1891 Great Northern horse pack trail was in this area, near Scenic it was north of the Tye River, at Alpine Falls it was on the south side. I figured this was a good place to cross so I backtracked up the railroad grade and started looking for a road east of the railroad. I found this and followed about a thousand feet east.<br />

I don't know how this happened, a very large rock balanced on a cedar stump. The rock has protected the top of the stump from the weather, there are still ax marks visible on the under cut so the rock has been there since shortly after the tree was cut down.</div>

Last week Joanne and Marion Calhoun donated some items to the Skykomish Historical Society. Marion's mother, Hazel Kirschbaum, lived in Alpine in the 1920's.<br />

<br />
Donna and I went to Alpine on Monday, we wanted to have a look around the shingle mill. We started on the north side, marked by the red arrow.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://content.lib.washington.edu/u?/pickett,259" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmX2GsH1XIHjYV7y8Wa7UI-kt3J-UprnAUzkAhVvcpVODGcW6NFjR1FnTrCj95-kyKHR98T3OaoTbD7afboJDjjs0vQ7akuNULUzyc7C2zpomDyC6TPOUkwQfljqYmz-AfxbNow1y-u4Y/s1600/alc84small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc83.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF_MXaume8t0_CY6rzT3uTmqLVWnjjetKoepFDwF8pXAy5q6_UimPyfjMGkzqO9DHlqfP_WXFcWzAlvBecWWLsZo9yoKzrQHbmzKLcPvRT-kcTOilG5mdt6JM-h4k7490mQAp9gTlKzqY/s1600/alc83small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here is the concrete thing we assume was the base for a steam engine to run the shingle machine. We started digging down the hill below this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc79.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9SQuycW6wOK55mK7P5jlxvgpWmTIOye0cFUxi1G0zBUQylExQRbrccMJjNWvijsPkdifQEKt4f90fhuI-jCeBtUxGsWquHM5hEX_nNByjJK6vBk5bjc2juNi8bXJkKr6ZPq3onbDAUuA/s1600/alc79small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
We figured a lot of stuff had been thrown off the platform down the hill, we were not disappointed. This spoke thing was our first find, along with dozens of nails, wire insulators, and broken light bulbs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc80.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho8iEiCMELyV-0Hgjw7KhrUzqzjwSb-oW4X0zTTs0le5yWb9Qlz16r9z9Rox-sOD3X5smsEJB8CvjapuFXSkC3UnQ0RW2H4BpL8n6fT2m04ls751gNGBrdKSbtoawGdzLOtnfBF3wZgZw/s1600/alc80small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I was hoping to find a bunch of cedar sawdust on the side of the hill, it was there in a petrified state. You can see a clump of it, marked by the X. The arrow shows the location of the steam engine base up the hill.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc78.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqzCNQ5DQPBI-jK1RtfNrMRIo0-4Wn9E1HpodGInSNj5DFcrH5LpqLg617ptp82rJzX5yp3QG-SoqU_GgHVjggNz0NidHKA26-pFyLDdDEIMOgJth1a4hTYeJqPvGhJHyV3hrZ5Ou-LcE/s1600/alc78small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Our prize: a genuine Alpine Lumber Company shingle. It was covered by a large piece of sheet metal, protecting it from the elements.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc81.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiULGZ-Pkmk1sgyl4RGxX2OGgWuRpKLzU-9gPGxkv15OkGmsiocOX-akBltFM3Qy00pMp59oG03rJ7ylLM6BkVLqUoKgU00S14_Jk7rALCdULB9Xcd0GHU5i4aQkAUlVY2eLBYfLiclkqk/s320/alc81small.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
After working in the rain for about four hours, we headed back to camp, fed and watered the animals and had some dinner.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc82.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihSdnakM-k8FfWGJ94Gkju8mWRiB2xf7_JmPNwGI7-C29OUqXLA-K6ummJ0S8ohdykM2tHmU0AzRBQ3KM-9dMFDmZw8wLUA62fIcNekqkfdQuXf6k03U2HZtOUpWTpzJaSSBT4ASqoR88/s1600/alc82small.jpg" /></a></div>Matt Cawbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09536690463504929208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5677077209484799604.post-3278845943781073492011-10-09T23:30:00.000-07:002012-08-03T22:37:41.306-07:00The Alpine InclineAlpine, WA October 9, 2011.<br />
<br />
The University of Washington Lee Pickett collection has this interesting photo, the description reads "Men and logs on railroad car, Snohomish County, ca. 1913."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://content.lib.washington.edu/u?/pickett,196" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnoPUNhI2Q-yeIlDGGKmqJ2YzGqJn0npiZ-HUdq94FbKlLPGY693iI01nWW0LjcwS_pHQiUS0HnFThE80NuTOSaDwMibPi-cOhKoJNIN_oUIZc8QtAsOAGU8U9mS-x6ZDK29YxlC70U1M/s1600/1738a.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The Alpine Lumber Company had three men employed on the incline crew in 1917. We know the Alpine logging railroad was down the hill from the mill, some of the grade is still visible near the Tye River. Presumably the logs would be unloaded from the train, maybe near Alpine Falls, then hauled up this incline to the mill.<br />
<br />
A few years ago I walked up the hill past the residential area of Alpine and photographed the mountains north of town, looking north across the valley. Compare the color photo with the 1913 photo, the mountains in both photos appear to match pretty closely. So it looks like this incline was just down the hill from Alpine. If you look at the old photo carefully there seems to be evidence of a recent fire, some of the trees are black and on the right there is no brush or vegetation on the ground.<br />

This USGS map shows the Tye River Valley with Alpine (on the right) and property the Alpine Lumber Company owned (in the center). The yellow circles correspond approximately to the photographer's position in the photos below.<br />

Lee Pickett photo looking east down the valley in 1931. The Stevens Pass Highway is on the right and runs diagonally to the center of the picture where it curves around the base of the the hill. On the left there is a bridge crossing the Tye River. This view includes Sections 28 and 29 where the Alpine Lumber Company owned property so the bridge may have been for their logging railroad. The Company started a camp in September 1919 in Section 28 but there don't appear to be any buildings in any of these photos. Alpine is about three miles from here, right center of the photo on the mountain in the background.<br />

<br />
A few of us were at Alpine last weekend, I haven't had time to work on any photos yet. We staked out three corners of the sawmill, shown on this map as red circles:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/0716.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK33pyc5-_qWIDlYaUejrd6HKhaUymnLnOrxERnv0VViZKXAwkRj6keROXPlyK8FgAz80igJnWIBXKAMXcIRoxHd0jCEPGjoNreUYNxDYMLlTw4CzdLKhLfV9ZHWed1VfuihLCC1BIGQM/s320/0716small.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The red x on the map is approximately 30 feet north of the railroad signal. <br />
<br />
We scaled off the map and used the creek as a reference point so the stakes may be 10 or 20 feet off from where the mill actually was. We hung some paper plates from the trees above each stake if anyone is interested in looking at our work.<br />

I just completed a CD with 35 pictures of Alpine, available in two styles: Mod and Ultra Mod, both free of charge. It includes all the maps you have seen on this blog, some old photos, modern photos and an introduction written by Tim Raetzloff, Senior Fellow at the planned-for Alpine Foundation. Using the information on this CD you can find the place, navigate around town, locate old buildings, and so on and so forth. If you want one send me your name and address and I will mail it to you.<br />

<br />
The Alpine Lumber Company shingle mill was a couple of hundred feet east of the lumber mill, it is the small building in the foreground in this photo. The smokestacks at the mill are about where we have excavated some of the concrete mill foundation.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://content.lib.washington.edu/u?/pickett,259" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVf39fqwtRLD83RokvuYVCmv3pKKwgf-t1MkFuR8tqshar5V3wxzOIB-Fssz3y6g1yXN9fBdp2NroqKhj_NU7GR2OaGuFpBz-XLSb-s3BNlc6_xe7j9HQEE8Td3OQmu245-mL3atj-s6Q/s1600/alc68small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The 1919 Annual Banquet and Dance book has a list of the mill equipment that includes one Sumner upright shingle machine, probably housed inside this building.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc69.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRwXdB7OOT0v645nel-zo7MDYStqhhaRzrVpzAo3c25rNG_79nQbOQ9omw2Ea3eKrfbJjLf5r1xTgqRsRQCahBPGrL63QI_6NX8qh8-90wFEf8XBBIz1Q44T4iFGxCJEA0mReYdfn_3i4/s1600/alc69small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The Sumner Iron Works produced three models of upright shingle machines: the Standard that cut 16" shingles, the High-Standard that cut 16" and 18" shingles, and the Gold Medal that cut 16", 18", and 24" shingles. Pictured here is the Gold Medal, the Alpine mill may have used a different model though.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In June we found a concrete thing near the shingle mill, this may have been a base for the engine that powered the shingle machine. The floor would have been 8 or 10 feet above the engine and it was probably connected to the shingle machine by a belt. In this photo we are looking west toward the lumber mill. The concrete foundation of the mill is about 200 feet in the distance. </div>

The Sumner Iron Works was in Everett and produced sawmill and logging equipment. The Nippon Lumber Company owned one Sumner roader, a steam donkey with a horizontal boiler. Acrowood Corporation, a manufacturer of forest products equipment, now occupies the old Sumner Iron Works factory at 4425 South Third Avenue in Everett.<br />

<br />
Today I visited Bob Kelly at the Skykomish Historical Society and we discussed the Alpine photo history CD. In the afternoon I went to Alpine Falls looking for a trail shown on this 1936 map:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc66.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicUWluvycH6y2-hIIZLlm_VRkkfkcgV_CSP8EOzPoAPjShQGT4NZrzB1x_yP-Zhuou2oUC6UoS5RgiHqES2VCXWNw7Cz1rqTUn7ZNgLsTmK5VhN12xpvfBFRX_af09KpJBQFYLcN2IT18/s1600/alc66small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Map is from <a href="http://www.historicmapworks.com/Map/US/1260058/Township+26+N+++Range+12+E+++Snoqualmie+National+Forest++Beckler+River++Tonga++Nippon++Korea/King+County+1936/Washington/">Historic Map Works.</a></div>
<br />
No sign of the trail after a couple of hours of brush whacking. Headed back to the truck, parked at the site of the historic Alpine Falls House of Souvenier. The house is gone, but not the outhouse. It's just a short but dangerous walk away across Highway 2.<br />

Tim had been there a few years ago and gave me directions; drive past the office and on the gravel road, to the left. I was pretty close but was unable to find the markers so I called Tim for more detailed directions. Look around the maple tree he said.<br />
<br />
Ah, there they are.<br />

<br />
On Wednesday, June 1 we cleared some brush at the saw mill in the area on the map with the blue and red marks. This is a rough estimate on the location since we don't have many reference points yet except the west end of the mill, sort of.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc53.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilTRNoEKUtjoZm1xi9fup5axNPkXfCZGA7AFMCKXLr0z3BjDiGY9CzxXfNml-VMT1PwjBagoKge_wu9Yuy7lA6vMh_Kc6OXMCj6-k_dNqhFLbK__CPSx6vjruI1mhiNcRyew_DWilmdpc/s1600/alc53small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
We found this thing, represented by the blue mark on the plan, two concrete pads with a some timbers in between. At ground level the wood is preserved quite well, the top part has rotted away but judging by the bolts still in place it was probably about 24" off the ground.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc49.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPrVWwwUoocKlfEGbLC-bqGFdWOJdnhXYpapKNikhW22I2RIt1HLLw5caRzz83qQUQUdgo16XDqFr7MSBo_jWFNEjgXRWs3gMPG_nqrW1kUCRvUDr-FXDaC6VyIejX-vspshPpKijukgE/s1600/alc49small.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Looking east, the railroad tracks are about 100' to the right. It kind of looks like the concrete anchored the timbers and maybe used as pier pads for posts.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc48.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWkitpg5TA_sE9SzX3L2Ebc2gATbw2PHZ4PXLliELCi3O1xJHYPzoph2s7byWA5GzQ4t3iwLkNW0k3CIwA3kjsErdtwr2vLByTA-ZJM8CixoFaWJatFeE0xLBTT3EpbtXncVCo4YFwUE4/s1600/alc48small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The piece of wood between the concrete is still solid. There was a fire here at one time, lots of charcoal in this area.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc50.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGb2CkoqsKhaYCNQy2I3Qlnc1gAowRD3CJpSLO-cxxFlYKPC-QGOvXcMaRvpD-NsmE6NTCXDWtDWQBvJ2D_bMGZsDjKZgEX-4z_jV9HQ4yjC6DZHcZ0TRrUXhznCpCrBdGvBOC8UPXGTU/s1600/alc50small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
11 feet west of our first discovery was a concrete block, measuring 77" x 30". This is shown in red on the <a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc53.jpg">saw mill plan.</a><br />

The Alpine depot was at mile post 1723.5, at 1723.9 is Great Northern Railway Bridge 406, built in 1902. I got some pictures of the bridge from below, don't try this at home though, very steep terrain.<br />

At the end of the day, we packed up our toys and stopped to admire our work as a westbound train came down the hill. Not just any train, the first car was carrying a 737 fuselage from Wichita to Renton. Unfortunately, we were out of position to get a picture and the cameras were already put away, so we high tailed it down to Skykomish in hopes of getting set up for a good shot when the train came through town. We made it with time to spare.<br />

On Sunday we wanted to see if there were any remains of the water tank shown on the 1927 map. A.F.E. 11554 2-28-1920, a 50,000 gallon tank 60 feet from center of the track.<br />

It is in the vicinity of the shingle mill, a small building, 25' x 28'. The south side was 122' from the tracks. Our concrete thing was 125' from the tracks.<br />

The concrete block is down the bank, about 10 feet below the tip of the arrow. The red line is the approximate location of the Alpine Lumber Company railroad spur. There was a platform extending about 40 feet from the railroad spur, over the bank. Photo was taken near the tracks next to the signal.<br />

Dated February 1926, there is an interesting note written on the saw mill:<br />

<br />
I was scouting around Section 27 today and got a picture of the Alpine vicinity from the Tye River.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc32.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT-APipO-h8nEq-0AxYUDqsVzhP2dq_i6zO1fXUXCBu9AqEM1Z8_XefeNFHjR9CEAo2PddO3Von8Tu634F5KtUroyeqpTkjJ5oVT_l90EMGy5sSAoyurfAgqL9_EOfati_r_6rA4Rp98Q/s1600/alc32small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can see my position in relation to Alpine on this map.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc33.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmcYEfeBJGSTQUWKWBjeNWoh66_GhcZHeCieCi3ulRr1HEc9u8oim23_YXDOiJWQBOSajH5QE1h5obNtiDy014HjO19gKn-xntK9oFiFMPWn811NORqEn3mMcV5IKe6OxWnPlo2Q-viUw/s1600/alc33small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a very interesting area. The Stevens Pass Highway, from 1924 until maybe 1940, was on the far side of the river bank. You can see a culvert pipe where the road has washed out, but the grade is still visible to the left of the pipe, curves around to the left of the transmission tower, then continues east about 1000 feet where it crossed the Tye River. In the area marked Centerline of road, there is an old railroad grade, possibly the Alpine Lumber Company logging railroad. The Alpine Lumber Company, Nippon Lumber Company, and C.L. Clemens owned 200 acres in Section 28 near Profitts Pond, according to a 1936 Metskers map. I haven't seen any evidence of where the railroad crossed the river but today I found what looks like an old grade near the area marked Gravel Pit on the map.This looks promising and will be explored later, maybe Sunday.<br />

Bob Kelly at the <a href="http://www.dflatblues.com/SkykomishHistoricalSociety/">Skykomish Historical Society</a> has provided a 1927 map of Alpine. It covers more of the town than the 1922 map, and shows the shingle mill and a water tank east of town. You can view it <a href="http://paineairport.com/images/1927.jpg">here</a> or click on the picture above.<br />
<br />
I will be going to Alpine on Sunday, May 22. If you would like to meet send me an email and we can coordinate arrival times.<br />

There were about nine of us that met in Skykomish this morning, we convoyed to Alpine and stopped at Alpine Falls to look around for a few minutes. The wide spot along Highway 2 where we parked was the location of The House of Souvenier.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
We then began the ten minute journey up the hill to Alpine.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3c7qMF7gv9A" width="425"></iframe><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Moments after arriving in Alpine we were greeted by a train. Donna never fails to get locomotive engineers to sound the horn.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/iOLUyz7ks5s" width="425"></iframe><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Donna and I decided to explore the hill east of the mill. We parked the car just about where the box car is in this picture.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc18.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHiA4pMbKu2z5aPXL2Gm2kvyK7m8J9hyphenhyphenpsbkw9u-qYovCTgvTvEh4ALCUbu-uImW2qEK4QFqJb612z9pwhzqYJi6FJCaiKpo42NF5mF8TIOVrm60POQv3Zk5VLcvn-Zrn8Z15qzW7kDP8/s1600/alc18small.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
We found nothing of interest but a bird skull.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjliTTCTL7zQ1FypaJZazo5nDprXbJtLP1BRRj-rxU-RwutsBAiY2VZcOCwwvJreGyDmQGzUKZPm2m8Kj4LnzaGQCArQl3bX6PFg-8AwPvGTu1-GtxSRT1Gjr-pgkLT3tHk63exrZ-16dk/s1600/alc21small.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
There were some good views from the top of the hill, this is looking east. You can see the old Great Northern grade across the valley, indicated by the line of cottonwood trees growing on the right of way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip4J8F44UsJP-JcJR_Xu8vF-Zgdla-GUr2wZozihD4sHl6c5WDEo1WXA0o2QT3ADimMGh6mhqnnJx7LFAtFRLZBINj1tXlJ1sJ-vlLs6Xhba_OIWnpedXbzZKDsVgzC4UYLcM8vPM0eCA/s1600/alc19small.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Looking west, the mill was located on the lower left, near where the white car is parked. Some houses and the school were in the clearing in the center of the picture.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://paineairport.com/images/alc20.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEdASV0Mhfb-yVoyxpGJrBg6vqoGSpXt2-FBr_nEs39JyAdd-BoW_2XSdOVuiOKaCeEf4ujiGxZrFZuqxFXQiGoxKu-Ti3e1fsInvY6Q0bkrOS7m5LrepmDQ_TJ9zG9AdEDJ5aK55gY_4/s1600/alc20small.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Here is a 1913 photo showing the mill and town looking west from the hill, a little bit lower than the modern photo.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Continuing down the north side of the hill, there appeared to be a narrow cut where maybe logs were yarded up the hill.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
This band saw blade was a couple of hundred feet north of the mill.</div>
<br />

<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After about two hours in this area we moved up the hill across the tracks. We poked around there until about 4 o'clock and found some shoes and bottles on the east side of Carroll Creek.<br />
